This is a delightful musical box decorated with the small figurine of classic children's book character Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter. In The Tale Of Peter Rabbit, the title character sneaks into Mr. McGregor's garden to eat his vegetables; a scene that is depicted here. Peter sits on a bed of soil and strewn radishes as he munches on the ones in his hands. Further vegetables and flowers have been painted on the round base against white relief. The bright colours of the plants and Peter's trademark blue coat make the piece particularly visually appealing, and children would adore the appearance of the furry woodland creature, based on the book illustrations that have captivated young audiences for generations.
